The walks are graded and you can buy a specific map of the area at the same time. These are proper OS maps and weather proofed if required.

I always think of walking as one of the few activities you can do for free - and now you can with this guide!

Walking, Hiking and Outdoor Shops

Cotswold Outdoor Orpington

2, Nugent Retail Park, Cray Ave, Orpington BR5 3RP, UK – 01689 885560

Helpful staff, just not the full range. Most things are online exclusive

Popped into this store. Unable to find what I wanted

C T's Golf Shop

1 Stanley Way, Orpington BR5 2HE, UK – 01689 890077

A golfing alladins cave !!! CT The owner is so helpful with golfing wallies like me. Took my golf shoes in to identify which studs to use. As a couple of them had stripped off he immediately offered to drill them out and re-studded the shoes all for the cost of the studs ! Such customer service. Needed a lithium battery for my wife's Powercaddy. No problem, available within two days and a great price to boot ! If you need any friendly golfing advice Cat's golf shop is the place to go.

Doing this solely to annoy him! When you go in you'll see why. Absolutely top bloke and great service. Be back soon for a putter grip. Went in again recently and had all irons and woods regripped, same mental humour, same top service.

Homebase - Orpington

Sevenoaks Way Industrial Estate, Main Rd, Orpington BR5 3QD, UK – 0345 640 7065

Homebase is a good store. It offers wall papers, paints, tools, tiles and much more. Not the cheapest of places as it is for the general public rather than trade prices but it is a good place to go to for what you need. There is a gardening section where you can pick up bargains and a good range of plants to tools. Staff are helpful and friendly, sections are nicely laid out. Definitely a good place to come to for items for home and garden.

Shop is medium size store with good range of choice. Use to be a good shop with helpful stuff, but now you can't find anyone on the floor. Looks like it's not possible to call them as no one answering the phone. I've called them five (6) times within an hour to get an answer. Ridiculous

WalkingWorld.jpg
Another good walking guide. Walkingworld has huge library of guides with a good selection of walks, of varying lengths and grades, pretty well anywhere in the UK. The walks come in an excellent format making them very easy to follow, with photographs to illustrate every important decision point and a proper Ordnance Survey map.

A modist annual subscription gives you unlimited access to all the walks. However you can Pay As Go by downloading indiviual walks. You get one walk free.

Crucially you can also find walks France, Spain, Norway, Portugal and Australia!

Snake bites

Most snake bites in the UK are not serious. But it's important to get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if:

  • you think you, or someone else, has been bitten by a snake

Find your nearest A&E

Information:

If you're not in the UK when you are bitten by a snake, contact the emergency medical services in the country you're in.

Get foreign travel advice on GOV.UK

What to do while you're waiting for help

Do

  • stay calm, most snake bites in the UK are not serious and can be treated

  • keep the part of your body that was bitten as still as you can

  • lie in the recovery position if you can

  • take paracetamol for any pain

  • try to remember the colour and pattern of the snake to tell the doctor

  • take off any jewellery and loosen clothes near the bite, in case it swells

Don’t

  • do not go near the snake, or try to catch or kill it

  • do not try to suck or cut the poison (venom) out of the bite

  • do not tie anything tightly round the part of the body where the bite is

  • do not take aspirin or ibuprofen, as they can make bleeding worse

What happens at the hospital

You will usually need to stay in hospital for at least 24 hours if you have been bitten by a snake.

The bite will be cleaned and bandaged. You may be given an injection to help protect you from tetanus.

If you were bitten by a poisonous (venomous) snake you will be treated with a medicine to fight the venom. This is given through a thin tube into a vein, called a drip.

Types of UK snake

Only 3 types of snake are found in the wild in the UK.

The adder is the only venomous snake, but you should get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Telling the doctors the colour and pattern of the snake that bit you could help them treat it.
